The campaign is an initiative of Generation Zero, a youth group that works on transport, housing, and climate change issues.

In the Appointments and Performance Review Committee 24 November 2016 the document Board Appointments Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs): Auckland Transport was tabled laying out the process for the selection of three director vacancies on the Auckland Transport board. This initiated the following process:

In this context, the signatories to the open letter are highlighting the need to use the director vacancies to address the issue of diversity on the Board of Auckland. As a council controlled organisation it is up to the Auckland Council Appointments and Performance Review Committee to approve the new directors. This committee consists of the following Councillors; Mayor Hon Phil Goff (Chairperson), Christine Fletcher (Deputy Chairperson), Chris Darby, Richard Hills, Penny Hulse, Desley Simpson, Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore (ex-officio). The open letter will be delivered on the 31st of January to the Committee.

This campaign is lead by Generation Zero in partnership with a range of groups and individals calling on Auckland Transport to be representative of Auckland's diversity. Contact the campaign at leroy@generationzero.org.nz
